Libya Crisis Appeal

The Jesuit Refugee Service - Malta, has launched a special appeal to respond to immediate basic needs of asylum seekers who have recently arrived in Malta after fleeing from Libya across the Mediterranean Sea in overcrowded rickety boats.

All asylum seekers who made it to land or who were rescued from drowning by the Armed Forces of Malta in the open seas south of Malta end up in detention centres until their asylum claim is processed.

In recent days, the most vulnerable among them - including families and women with babies or children, who should not be detained - have begun to be released into already crowded Open Centres where facilities are extremely limited.
