Am I Being Called?

"Nothing is more practical than finding God, that is, than falling in love in a quite absolute, final way. What you are in love with, what seizes your imagination, will affect everything. It will decide what will get you out of bed in the morning, what you will do with your evenings, how you spend your weekends, what you read, who you know, what breaks your heart, and what amazes you with joy and gratitude. Fall in love, stay in love and it will decide everything."

Pedro Arrupe SJ (1907-1991)
Superior General 1965-1983

Dream about it!

St. Ignatius, the founder of the Jesuits, started his journey towards God by listening to his desires and his dreams. Why don't you also listen to what your heart really desires and what you dream you can do with your life? Read the following dreams and see if any of them ring true with what you wish

    • I want my life to have more meaning than it has at present
    • I desire to do more for Christ
    • I want to make a difference to other people
    • I want my life to be more centred on God's plan for the world
    • I want to spend my life as part of something greater than myself

If the above statements make sense to you and you have tasted what Jesuit life is all about try checking whether these statements also sound true to your experience

    • Find something in the story of St. Ignatius that echoes with your life
    • There is something in me that finds the Jesuit vision attractive
    • Being around the Jesuits and participating in their apostolic works is very life-giving
    • The thought of being a Jesuit has been in my mind for several months now and I can see moments in my past which give me a sense that this is the kind of life for me
    • Occasionally, during the past number of years, I have found myself wondering about joining the Jesuits
    • The question about being a Jesuit won't go away

If they are also true... maybe it is time to speak to somebody about your desires and dreams to start a journey together to find out whether this is the best way in your life in which you can love and serve God.

Pray about it!

  • Choose a quiet time and place and notice what happens in your heart when you bring the thought of being a Jesuit into your prayer.
  • Repeat this from time to time over the next few weeks, and each time notice what happens in your heart as you pray.
  • Don't be upset if you find anxieties as well as attractions bubbling up in you. It would be surprising if you didn't find some fears and doubts lurking among your hopes and dreams. If you think you're still interested in the Jesuit way of life? Then move ahead.
