Volunteering Short-Term

BARI - July

Though poverty is usually associated with developing countries, particularly in the African and American continents, it is an inescapable reality even closer to our shores. An intense summer camp is organised in the suburbs of Bari where there are social problems. Though Italy is one of Europe's most developed countries, certain regions are found to suffer from unexpected pockets of poverty.

The volunteers in Bari  look after around 60 children, and volunteers' daily chores include taking the children to the beach every day, but also organising sessions of crafts and games and, above all, to provide them with the opportunity to play and have fun like other children their age.

The young people participating in this summer school are urged to give their time and efforts in a loving and gratuitous way. The experience requires a lot of energy. Applicants are required to participate in the preparatory sessions prior to the departure date.

Those interested can contact Miriam Portelli on miriampor@onvol.net or on 99895505.

ETHIOPIA - August

The Mother Theresa Home of the Dying run by the Missionaries of Charity in Addis Ababa offers medication and care to those who are at the end of their life.

Every summer, a group of volunteers works in this home, in an attempt to make the last few moments of these persons' lives as comfortable as possible and to make the patients feel loved and cared for. The volunteers reside in an orphanage run by Maltese Franciscan nuns and help to look after the children and babies, most of whom have lost their parents to the deadly AIDS and are susceptible to the illness themselves. The volunteers also offer assistance at the Angels Children's Home, run by Monica Tonna Barthet, a Maltese woman who is dedicating her life to looking after a group of boys in their late childhood.

Applicants must be willing to live the experience with simple means and in a community spirit. Students having a medical formation background and a desire to discover the missionary aspect of the Church are particularly urged to apply.
